How to Select the Right Book Category for Your Self-published Amazon Book

CATEGORY: Promoting|TAGS: book categories, self-published

Pay attention to the category strings when you list your new title on Amazon?

New KDP authors must make sure to select the right category to list their new self-published book in, otherwise, no one will find it. To do this, you must pay attention to the category strings.

In case youíre wondering what a category string is, itís just a system that Amazon uses to help authors choose the right categories. It enables them to be as specific as possible when listing their book titles.

Notice this example:

Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Teen & Young Adult > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Paranormal & Urban

Many authors donít always take note of the various ways that their book can be listed, or the numerous categories their title can show up in.

Select categories that are the MOST relevant to your book. For instance, if your book has a character with a love interest, but itís not really a romance novel, donít list it that way. On the other hand, if itís a romance, but also a western, donít just list as a romance.

Be as specific as possible, and while youíre at it, try to select categories that are the least competitive. You have a better chance of getting a higher Amazon ranking.

As far as most authors know, Amazon allows you to choose 3 different categories to list your new book title in. But I found out, you can actually select more. Read what the website has to say about how to select more Amazon book categories.
